JL Studio was honored by the opportunity to collaborate again with our clients on the design of a 2nd location of Tacos del Cartel! Located in the Central Business District, Tacos del Cartel New Orleans brings a new breath of vibrance, rich culture, and exquisite cuisine to the up & coming South Market Neighborhood.

The highly intricate design for this location has deep roots; combining inspiration from the vibrant culture of Mexico and the rich soulfulness of the Crescent City. Starting with what was once a bland, commercial space, JL Studio embraced 1010 Girod Street as the perfect blank canvas to transform. Our clients’ dream was to create a 2nd Tacos del Cartel that would captivate and inspire each guest, and we are so proud to have delivered a space where every detail tells a story! From the life-sized trees adorned with pink floral canopies to the artisan-crafted alebrije jaguar head, each element has been meticulously designed to evoke a sense of wonder. The hand-painted bar mural, hypnotic mirrored bathroom hallway, and custom iridescent pink bookcase display are just a glimpse of the one-of-a-kind features throughout this space.

When it came to the courtyard, our biggest challenge was creating a functional dining area that stayed true to the lively interior, while operating within the limitations of an outdoor environment. After developing countless presentations, drafts, and renderings during the project’s conceptual phase, we landed on a luscious, tranquil courtyard design reminiscent of the old-world charm of historic Mexico City. Everything from the distressed stucco walls to the hand-painted lanterns and lush greenery create an ambiance that transport you to a luxurious, earthy paradise. Don’t be fooled by the more muted color palette, with a custom mosaic fountain, illuminated pink floral tunnel, and towering 5-foot jaguar topiary, this dining space isn’t lacking in personality or flair!

The Pink Penthouse is a historic property nestled in the French Quarter of New Orleans on Gov. Nicholls. This is the clients second home, party pad, and weekend getaway. The mission for this project was to create an extension of the wild nightlife and to feel otherworldly.

The use of heavy patterns, colors, pink leaf ceiling, the DIY mod podge wall of the clients family and friends & floor to ceiling chain wall installed by the JL team, and pop art accessories, many of which were handmade by various artists, make this quite the maximalist design - where more is truly more.

In this renovation, we removed a door and the doubled sided fireplaces that separated the two rooms - where the kitchen peninsula and bar seating now sits, in order to create a more open space for the clients to entertain. For the finishing touches — we used fine paints of Europe, panel ready appliances, designed custom stone epoxied by hand in India to create a slab, and a custom Italian red velvet sofa. We are now working on the main part of the house, so stay tuned!

This Airbnb named the “The Butterfly House,” fits right in with the “keep it weird” mantra of Austin, TX. This house is full of explosive colors, a dramatic wall mural above the television, and layers of depth throughout. JL Studio was hired to remotely work on this full-gut renovation and throughout the project, the JL Studio team flew to Austin only two times! Once to take measures & the second to accessorize and style the space for it be turnkey for the owners and guests!

In this renovation, we started with reframing the stairs, ripping out the sheet rocked pony walls along the staircase and catwalk and replacing them with a modern railing to open up the entry and stairwell. At JL, we believe in the importance of good lighting! So we incorporated LED lighting in the stair treads and statement light fixtures throughout the home to bring a feeling of unique ambiance. All upholstery fabrics were selected at a performance grade for maximum durability for Airbnb renters. A heavy use of plants brings a sense of natural wonder, and thoughtfully curated accessories bring an artistic touch. For the kitchen, JL had to get creative on how to maximize the rather small space. Using panel ready appliances and floating shelves that also add some light to the space, along with patterned tile that goes up to the ceiling, were all key in making it feel even more expansive and elegant! To this day, the “Butterfly House” is one of the most highly requested Airbnb locations in the ATX area!

This home in Belle Chasse, LA was bought by the client to be next-door to their growing family. They hired JL to elevate the master suite — a task that required a little bit of new construction. For this space we went with darker tones, and created custom roller shades and drapery to make the bedroom extra comfortable for sleep. As with any JL project, we love to customize. The bedding, bed frame, and sofa are all custom made.

For the his and hers closets, we had two major tasks. One was to create more space. And with grand babies on the way, the second task was to prioritize gun safety. The clients have a huge collection, now in a hidden room behind a wall of what looks like shoe shelving.

For her closet, we were able to build out onto the existing outdoor patio - to create the closet of her dreams. This stunning space boasts floor to ceiling mirrors, a gorgeous chandelier, and plenty of space for her wardrobe.

From drab to fab, this full gut bathroom renovation was completely transformed from floor to ceiling. JL Studio was tasked with preserving the existing black toilet and shower wall tile, while also making the space feel like it was seamlessly designed and brand new!

The new crema marfil marble flooring and alligator wall coverings give the space an elegant and dramatic feel. JL also replaced the horizontal vanity light fixture with two vertical wall sconces to incorporate a taller mirror and create an illusion of higher ceilings, which boasts fine paints of Europe & gold leaf crown molding. With this detail, we love how it draws the eye up and brings the slightest, most perfect amount of contrast in an otherwise monochromatic space. The custom marble vanity with gold legs and a gold under mount sink was designed to create a bold feature in this stunning bathroom!

Now a dazzling space designed to modernize and fulfill all of their cooking and entertaining dreams, this original 1990s kitchen was designed when the clients first built the home. Beautiful in its time, but way overdue for an upgrade! For this project, the client was tired of the heavy ornamentation in the cabinetry and wanted to focus on decluttering. They wanted a beautiful, yet functional space that fed both their love for aesthetic and culinary experiences.

JL Studio added a microwave drawer in the island, incorporated LED lit floating shelves, and added a variety of decorative items that bring in some warmth and personality to the kitchen. All of the existing granite was replaced with waterfall quartzite slabs. As well as a book matching detail and custom shaped back splash above the stove, also replacing the dollhouse sized hood with a new custom hood, finished in a Venetian plaster and Metallic finish.

With a huge emphasis on efficiency and reorganization, JL also transformed the existing pantry into a bar room with raised ceilings and beautifully glossed cabinetry. In the new and improved bar room you’ll also see an antique mirror wall, a chandelier, and LED strip lighting to really make the space feel like an elevated experience.

Sometimes you don’t need to do a full gut renovation to have something beautiful! In this residential office space, we transformed it through the power of paint, texture, new furniture, and modernized accessories. We went with a soft blue and white color palette to create a serene feel for our clients as they look out onto their view of the golf course.

We kept everything as it was with the existing cabinetry layout, which features a double sided peninsula so two people can share the workspace at once and was very functional as it was. We updated existing finishes, put in new floor tile, and painted the countertops and cabinets. We also had a faux finisher come in to do a custom plaster finish on the walls and changed out cabinet hardware to more Victorian style statement hardware.

To bring the eye out to the golf course views, we enhanced the windows with custom roman shades and floor to ceiling drapery panels.
